THE ISLANDS
The Fire Nation is actually compromised of islands, most of which are volcanic. While it doesn't have the land mass of the Earth Kingdom, it is as almost as large in terms of population. Most of the islands are not inhabited because they are either too small or too dangerous to support life. Of those that are, there is very little in the way of differences between one island and the next. All of the islands have at least one beach along their coast, usually the eastern shores. The rest of the shoreline tends to be rocky, more so if the next island is nearby. Beyond the shore, there is dense jungle and rainforest. Each island has a summit of black volcanic rock. If the island has an active volcano, it is here you will find lava pools and streams. Be careful where you step; some lava flows have a thin crust of cooled rock. One false step and you'll have a hot foot.
Unfortunately, the terrian doesn't make for good farming. The soil is very shallow, although rich in nutrients. Most of what grows here is natural to the islands, like coconut, pineapple, mango, and some orange and banana trees. You'll find very little in the way of wheat, rice, and grain, though it does exist on some of the flatter islands. As for animals, fortunately there is a wide variety.
THE PEOPLE
The people of the fire nation are not exactlly the most friendly sort. They are very ambitious, energetic, and sometimes short-tempered. Many of them see tasks like farming and sewing below them and will hire servants to do the work for them. This is especially true among the most wealthy. If you're not rich yourself, don't worry about it. You can just be a servant until you save up for your own.
As might be expected, there aren't many farmers or craftworkers in the Fire Nation. There are some, but most of them do it for love rather than to make a living. As such the Fire Nation imports a lot of its goods and services. The main trade partner is with the Earth Kingdom, but some traders also work with the Northern Water Tribe. Where there's ships and trading, there's bound to be pirates. Most of the pirates in the oceans come from the Fire Nation, poor people who didn't want to work.
The Fire Nation is the first of the four to create an actual army. Up until this point, there have been warriors meant to protect people from evil spirits and dangerous beasts. Even when two cities would fight each other, often the warriors would be untrained and undisciplined. The Fire Nation has soldiers, not warriors. These are selected as yound boys, no older than ten, and trained in the art of sword, spear, and shield. They are taught to follow orders accurately and without hesitation. Because of the soldiers, the Fire Nation is one of the safest places to live. They patrol the streets and villages and ensure no one is causing trouble.
The people of the Fire Nation are very pale in complexion. They have tall, lean, slender forms with angular faces. Their eyes are almond-shaped in shades of gold and amber. Their hair is jet black, straight, and usually worn simply. They often were clothing in shades of black and red with gold touches here and there. Their homes are often large built of dark wood with red tiled roofs.
THE FIRE NATION CAPITOL
The capitol of the Fire Nation doesn't have a fancy name; it is simply referred to as the capitol. It is located on one of the larger islands and almost covers the entire island with buildings and streets. The island is divided into four areas: the markets, the docks, the houses, and the palace.
The markets sit snugly on the north shore. There are many buildings, stalls, and restaurants located here. You can buy anything you need here from food and clothing to building materials and servants, even animals and pets. It is a very busy place. In addition to common market stalls, you will also find healers huts and fortune tellers stalls. Basically, anything that can be sold can be found here. Because the Fire Nation are such ample traders, there is no telling what you might find here. It's even possible to find a cute polar bear dog puppy here in the great markets of the Fire Nation.
On the west shore lies the docks and harbor. This long crescent shaped harbor is almost always filled with boats and ships. Some are tiny canoes brought over from other islands in the Fire Nation. Others are massive war galleys used for patrolling the oceans for pirates. The docks themselves are divided up according to which nation the boat is from. Of course the Fire Nation section is the largest, followed by the Earth Kingdom, and then the Northern Water Tribe. There's not a section for the Air Nomads because they don't have boats. In addition to the docks, you'll also find warehouses crammed full of stuff. After being unloaded, each item must be carefully examined and cataloged to determine its value before it can be sent to the markets. It is a tedious job, but if it weren't done, the traders could exploit the buyers.
On the east shore are the residences of the people of the Fire Nation Capitol. The largest homes sit closest to the shore. As you go further inland, the houses grow smaller and shabbier. The houses on the shore come complete with a section of beach and most have fine large gardens as well. The rich houses are made from obsidian and lava rock with ornate carvings on floors and pillars and red ceramic tiled roofs. The smaller homes are made of dark wood with roofs painted red.
On the south shore lies the grand palace of the Fire Lord. This is a huge complex of buildings in which the royal guards, servants and councilors all live along with their families in addition to the royal family. Other buildings include feast halls, audience chambers, libraries, armories, kitchens, cellars, stables, forges, and even an animal menagerie. All of the buildings are made of obsidian and lava rock with dark wood floors and red ceramic tile roofs. The more important buildings have carvings of dragons and phoenixes inlaid in gold on pillars and the floors, and some even have great mosaics on the floors. They also have sculptures of dragons and phoenixes made out of obsidian and gold on the roofs and above the archways of doors. Outside large gardens with many beautiful flowers, large ponds, and long, green lawns slope downward to the palace's private beach and docks. The docks have large pleasure barges and war ships. In between the south shore and the north shore of the neighboring island stand many rocks and sand bars. It takes a skilled captain to reach the royal docks, so the palace is fairly safe from pirates. Nonetheless, a chain barricade sits between the two shores that can rip apart any ship passing without permission.
In the center of the island is a great forest of tall jungle trees. There are also several small huts here in which reside the very poor. These people live off the land and seldom venture into the streets of the capitol.
THE SUN WARRIORS
The Sun Warriors is a culture sect of the Fire Nation. Most people don't know they exist. They live on one of the smaller islands of the Fire Nation, one that is thickly covered in jungle. In the deep of the jungle, they have built high stepped pryamids to worship the sun. They have lived here for generations, trusting their safety to the sun. They believe that the sun put them here to protect the dragons. The island is the breeding and nesting place of the Fire Nation's dragons. They take their responsibility very seriously. They will actually kill you and scarafice you if they think you mean to harm the dragons.
At first glance, the Sun Warriors seem to be a savage people. They only wear clothes to cover what they must, so you'll see many men with bare chests. Their clothing is dyed the colors of the sun: red, orange, and yellow. They wear gold arm bracelets and anklets. The chief wears a gold headband from which sprout feathers of white and yellow. They are similiar in appearance to the rest of the Fire Nation except that their skin is much darker. They tend to treat strangers harshly and a big part of why they are little known is that they kill most everyone who visits them.
THE OCEAN
Water, water everywhere but not a drop to drink. The ocean is vast and more or less landless. There's nothing really exciting about the ocean, though there's giant sea serpents and karkens and other monsters of the deep. Some even believe there are lionturtles deep down. There's no plants on the ocean, though sometimes you can find massive beds of seaweeds that seem to stretch for miles.
If there's nothing here, why do people bother with it? Easy. It's the only way to get from one nation to the next. Because the Fire Nation has the largest fleet of the four nations, it has decided to claim the ocean as part of its jurisdiction. No one really cares. Fire Nation war galleys patrol the ocean taking out pirates and dangerous beasts. Okay, the Fire Nation does demand a small tax from traders, but it's a small price to pay for safety.
Unfortunately, the price doesn't include the dangers of the ocean itself. Sometimes it will be calm and flat; other times it will rage in a storm and send ten feet waves to capsize you. Only an experienced captain can know its moods and how best to whether them. Even then, one wrong move, and your ship could wash ashore broken, and you could end up on the ocean floor.
